update

hello my friends... you can imagine my life has been very exciting over the last 6 months, and i decided to give everyone a short update, just in case you were wondering what happened during the financial fireworks over the last months. times have been very tough and it has been very difficult to keep going and hope for the best while watching the financial world crashing. It has been an incredible experience watching the crisis unfold from inside the trading floor, and I am happy to say that I still have a job and was able to land a position as a trader, so I am very very very happy and lucky. I will not share all the crazy stories on this blog or any other blog, but am writing down all my stories and hope to publish a proper book some time next year, if I ever get time to finish it - life is very busy now. Hope you are all well and keep your spirits high! all the best!

Hi Angie,

I enjoyed reading about your life as a Management Consultant at McKinsey and despite the high demands of the job, I was very surprised that you decided to leave it for a career in trading. Anyhow, I want to take this opportunity to thank you for the insight and glimpse into management consulting life on your blog. I'm currently deciding upon a career as a management consulting (just a few years) and you're experience have been helpful in helping me make a decision.

Hi Angie -

I'm also in a similar state, currently in IT counsulting and wanting to be a trader. But current financial market is scary but thrilling.

After all, everything need to pass, a bad time or a good time so no backing out will get into trading soon.

Any idea about CASS Bussiness school - MSC mathematical trading and Finance. looking out for only trading (no mgmt). I did not see any other school giving a degree specific to trading.
Also, is it a good option for starting a career as a trader.

Wishing you good luck in all your endeavors. Don't know if you get to respond in your busy schedule.

Kind Regards,
Bali

Hi Angie,

I have been a consultant for about 6 years now, first doing strategic and commercial due diligence, then corporate strategy and now been busy with operating models and ops excellence lean six sigma stuff.

Due to my long view on commodity prices and my experience in the natural resources space, I want to be a commodity trader.

Google doesn't help much in this regard and wanted pointers from you on:

- is there a list of firms that do commodity trading in london that i could use?
- can i penetrate the market without going to school? I am willing to be an assistant/article to a trader and would rather learn on the job than go to school
- what are the basic things that i need to know like the must read books that you found useful once you started trading?

Look forward to some advise - please write back to me on sdslimited@yahoo.co.in

I am based in central london and if you think that may be a short conversation would be more effective mode of communicating, I would be thrilled to meet you up for coffee.

Many thanks
Satya

Hi Angie,
Good to know you survived the crash. I found your blog very cool because I wanted to get into financial services as well (as a trader). So signed up for my MBA (had applied to LBS as well, but picked another school where I was successful in my application). Then started interviewing, and managed to land a spot with a top i-bank. Thanks to you, I managed to know what to do, etc. especially that article you wrote about what to know (bond curves, etc.) during financial interviews.
Anyway, getting trained up in market risk & instrument trading, then move into a trading post in July.

Just wanted to give a nod in your direction, and thanks a lot.

Finance is still a lot of fun, watch out for those protesters though!

what degrees/qualifications would you recommend in order to get into trading?

I just wanted to say that finding this blog is a god send. I'm applying for the LBS MBA program to start in 2010, and I have my interview in two days! It just so happens the my interviewer is a partner at McKinsey and I'm interested in working in consulting in the future. Oh, and I'm also a woman, so it's nice to hear a fellow woman's point of view :) Thanks!

Hallo Angie,

Vielen Dank!

Ciao,

Y
